Excerpt from journal of Lex Winden,

I’ve been spending a lot of time playing the piano lately, it’s supposed to help and expand my creative expertise. But lately. I don’t think I can live like this anymore. Devonny has been paranoid ever since I became friends with April Scarlett down the road…

Devonny spent a lot of time avoiding baby Bryce, despite the fact that she had taken over all the baby duties in the house as Lex was almost obsessed with getting promotions and playing the piano. Anything that didn’t deal with the baby. Devonny had expected that she would be in charge of all the baby duties and found herself enjoying the baby duties… but not the baby.

Every time she looked into Bryce’s eyes she felt disgusted at the mirror reflection of Lex staring back at her. It brought back all the neglect, the fights, and her. Her that ruined their perfect marriage, her that Lex spent more time with than Devonny and Bryce combined! She tried loving him, she really did, but she couldn’t bring herself to snuggle him, or play with him.

To make the baby times worse, Bryce had a tendency to wake up in the early morning in need of a diaper change or for a bottle, which didn’t help Devonny’s mood or her affections for him.

And it wasn’t out of the ordinary when someone came ringing the Winden’s doorbell. Lex had needed lots of connections to secure his job, and what works better with male associates than Devonny’s pretty face? Devonny hadn’t said anything regarding being used as a tool as it seemed that it was the only time Lex spent time with her these days. At all these cooperate parties they had at their house, shmoozing his way up the ranks was the longest time he was away from the punching bag or the bookshelf.

Devonny didn’t mind the male colleagues or the females either at first, but she did mind the one female that started coming home with Lex more and more often. Her name was Brandi and she started hanging around more frequently, or more correctly put, in the hot tub. With Lex.

Devonny always bit her tongue when Brandi came to visit. She didn’t want to cause another scene with Lex like she did when April strolled by, it would be unbecoming of a woman of her stature to do that.

The day that Joe dropped by for a visit to check up on his new up and coming prospect, was when Devonny had the last straw.

“Is it… alright with you that your husband is so friendly with other women?”

Devonny’s mouth straightened into a thin line as she replied icily back to Joe, “No it is not alright but what can I do?” and with that, she spun on her heel and stormed back into the house seething.

Joe entered the hot tub as well to hopefully dispel what was happening in the hot tub. He had been visiting the house lately, and had become close friends with Devonny. He didn’t want to see her so cold and bitter, I mean sure he had to be mean sometimes and come down hard on the athletes he was responsible for, but this was a different matter completely.

After a while, Lex had wandered back in the house to prepare some dinner and Joe followed. He took a seat at the dining table and noticed the bottle lying on the floor and realized that Lex had a child. A child that he didn’t even bother announcing or to throw a baby shower before the birth.

“You have a child Lex?” Joe asked tentatively. Lex didn’t stop chopping up the vegetables as he mhmmed non-committedly.

“What’s his name?”

“Bryce, I think… why?” Lex asked as he mixed the sauce for the spaghetti.

“I think you should spend more time with your wife and child Lex, take the day off. The job will still be there.”

Lex’s grip tightened on the spoon, which went unnoticed by Joe thankfully.

“I do spend time with the family Joe, just that it’s been… a little hectic around here and Devonny’s suffering from the post-pregnancy symptoms.”

“Whatever you say Lex, that’s mighty good smelling spaghetti.” Joe changed the subject as Devonny walked in and took a seat in front of Joe and waited for her portion of the spaghetti.

Brandi walked in as Lex was serving Devonny a plate of spaghetti and Devonny refused to look at her.

“You can sit on the far side where there’s a plate of spaghetti already Brandi,” Lex said as he got himself a plate of spaghetti and sat in the middle.

“I’ll sit over thre with Brandi,” Joe said as he got up and brought his spaghetti over across to sit across from Brandi.

The rest of the dinner passed normally as well as it could of with Devonny glaring at Brandi ever so often. After dinner, Devonny left the house stating she was going to go out for a night on the town with the girls and Joe left for a sports bar with some of his colleagues to see how the game against the Tinnington Tigers was going. He was about to say goodbye to Brandi when Bryce started bawling from the nursery.

Lex went to carry Bryce when he passed the calendar, it was Bryce’s birthday today! He hadn’t payed much attention to Bryce for much of the baby years. He opened the fridge and found a cake they were saving for dessert tonight, but Joe had left early so they didn’t feel obligated to bring it out. It would have to do for a birthday cake.

Brandi stuck around to help with Bryce’s impromptu birthday party and in a second…

…baby Bryce grew up to be toddler Bryce!

I wish Devonny was here to see this.
